Trusting in a Second Chance: The Tactics of the Village Disabled Ex-Servicemen to Negociate Their Sortie de Guerre, 1914-1939

Sat, November 23, 4:00 to 5:45pm, San Francisco Marriott Marquis, Floor: 5, Sierra F

Abstract

This paper will discuss how after being suddenly reformed because of the loss of their ability to work (and fight), the tsar's peasant soldiers were compelled to reinvent themselves. In a society overmobilized by the war effort, and later by the "construction of socialism", they were not anymore members of fighters', able-bodied field workers', non-traumatised husbands and fathers' communities. Forced to adhere to the overall discourse of the "second chance", they ought to negotiate a path between the moral and economic imperatives imposed on them, and totally insufficient reintegration opportunities, to transform a personal disaster into an improved way of life.
