Traditional approaches to teaching Russian literature and culture have often bracketed the formative context of a multi-ethnic empire and the formative texts of culturally non-hegemonic writers. This tendency holds especially true for introductory survey courses, where instructors often feel compelled to focus on "the greats." This presentation will describe one instructor's work to transform introductory courses, via content and pedagogy, into inclusive learning communities that engage with and more accurately reflect on the diverse complexity of imperial, Soviet and post-Soviet Russian life.
