Queering the Russian Novel

Mon, November 25, 8:00 to 9:45am, San Francisco Marriott Marquis, Floor: 4, Pacific C

Abstract

Through examining the nature of sexuality in early 20th century Russian modernist novels, we
have come across a plethora of narratives that have queer protagonists and gender and sexual
relations. Very often these texts do not get included in Russian literature courses or explored in
scholarship, as a majority of these works are not considered canonical. But, including these
novels in coursework and scholarly pursuits is advantageous to us all. It provides us with new
understandings about this time period, as related to the social, cultural, and political. Importantly, it also fosters progressive discourses about the composition of our literary canon and gives recognition to literary works and authors that are often silenced by the canon’s inherent biases, in hopes of making our field and canon more inclusive and diverse.
