Creating a Code of Conduct for ASEEES: Process and Design

Mon, November 25, 8:00 to 9:45am, San Francisco Marriott Marquis, Floor: 4, Pacific C

Abstract

This presentation discusses the effort to create a Code of Conduct for ASEEES conventions. As a hybrid conference that attracts scholars from all over the world, ASEEES brings together researchers with diverse backgrounds, cultural expectations, and generational beliefs that do not always overlap with the aspirations of professional diversity and inclusion. The conference can be a very alienating experience for people of color, women academics, and lgbtq+ Slavists. The 2018 Convention was no exception as was evidenced by several incidents of sexist and racist behavior. It is hoped that by November 2019, we will have a Code of Conduct – and I will share the process of its composition as a CADI representative on the ad-hoc committee.
