Creating Sacred Spaces: Lidov's Hierotopy

Sun, November 24, 8:00 to 9:45am, San Francisco Marriott Marquis, Floor: LB2, Salon 14

Session Submission Type: Roundtable

Brief Description

The recent work of Alexei Lidov challenges us to consider iconic images as a spatial phenomenon rather than religious pictures. In addition to shifting the way we regard icons, Lidov's work also opens a new field of cultural history that he calls "hierotopy" -- that is, the creation of sacred spaces through a special form of creativity that may involve architecture, light, sound, and other media. This round table aims to discuss the possibilities of understanding the creation of sacred space (hierotopy) in literature, to explore the works' iconic perspective, and to consider how this dynamic relates to the notion of aesthetic creation.
