Abstract

This paper explores communist gender policies towards Muslim women in socialist Yugoslavia and Bulgaria. It looks at how communist women’s organizations spearheaded various campaigns including the unveiling of Muslim women, for nationalistic and state-building purposes. It questions the production of knowledge behind gender policies and examines the reactions and strategies employed by Muslim women, focusing on methods of resistance.
