Aeneas Goes North: Russian Translations of Vergil’s Roman National Epic

Fri, November 22, 3:30 to 5:15pm EST (3:30 to 5:15pm EST), Boston Marriott Copley Place, Floor: 4th Floor, Orleans

Abstract

This talk will focus on Russian translations of Vergil's "Aeneid" and the fact that even today there is no canonical translation like there are ones for Homer by Gnedich and Zhukovsky. I will explore the struggle that even most accomplished poets, like Valerii Brisuov or Afanasii Fet, faced when approaching Vergil’s text with “foreignizing” or “domesticating” translation practices.
