Bohdan Ihor Antonych's Poetry: Intersemiotic Translation and Polish-Ukrainian Cultural Dialogue

Thu, November 21, 2:00 to 3:45pm EST (2:00 to 3:45pm EST), Boston Marriott Copley Place, Floor: 4th Floor, Provincetown

Abstract

I will focus on the analysis of the perception of Bohdan Ihor Antonych's work as interpreted by Polish and Ukrainian artists representing various fields of art. I will start with an analysis of recent translations of his poems into Polish. However, I will be particularly interested in those projects that attempt to read the legacy of Bohdan Ihor Antonych in the context of the semiotic landscape of the Polish-Ukrainian borderland. I will analyse projects such as "Antonych at Home" (2017) by Yuri Andrukhovych, Ulyana Horbachevska, Mark Tokar, Ryszard Latecki, Bart Palyga, "On Another Land of the Same" by Piotr Bussold (2020), as well as the Polish-Ukrainian project "Green Antonych" with the participation of Pyrih i Batih (2023) I will compare the different semiotic systems used by contemporary artists and their influence on the perception of his poet's work, the revision of its established interpretations and the creation of new ones.
