Anomalous Syntax and Other Translation Issues in the Poetry of Bohdan Ihor Antonych

Thu, November 21, 2:00 to 3:45pm EST (2:00 to 3:45pm EST), Boston Marriott Copley Place, Floor: 4th Floor, Provincetown

Abstract

This paper will discuss instances when the irregular syntax of lines of Antonych’s poetry are perfectly acceptable in Ukrainian and instances when it deviates so extensively from the norm that it becomes disruptive for the reader and by extension – vexing for the translator. With English, as most languages in the world, primarily being an SOV (subject-object-verb) language, disjunctive word order often cannot be conveyed precisely in English because meaning could be obscured in translation with a resultant high level of awkwardness when read in English. The paper will articulate how the translator needs to navigate these and other issues in translation.
