Orientalization of 19th-Century Eastern European Art: The Case Study of the 'Polish Munich School'

Abstract

In this paper, I apply recent postcolonial discourses to analyze the situation of Polish art in the nineteenth century, to determine the role it played in liberating and asserting the identity of Eastern Europe at the time, and to find the roots of its popularity among the Western public.
