Émigré Poles in Britain: Historical Writing and the Idea of Liberation, 1830-1918

Abstract

Histories of Poland – both published works and lectures – were one of the principal mechanisms that the group of Polish refugees who fled to Britain in the nineteenth century employed to promote their cause. This paper explores the relationship between different ideas of liberation in these works: freedom from domination by foreign powers
and the emancipation of the peasant population from serfdom.
