The paper will focus on an analysis of the film Nikoletina Bursać, directed by Branko Bauer in 1964. This movie is exemplary of a specific negotiation with the Marxist revolutionary narrative: through a double gesture, it invents a new subject of the revolution, while excluding it from Yugoslav modernity at the same time. Nikoletina Bursać thus witnesses to a paradoxical positioning with regards to the authoritative Marxist discourse, which had broad consequences for Yugoslav cultural self-fashioning.
