Autonomy, Protectorate, or Back to Germany?: Local Initiatives in Memel between 1918-1924

Fri, November 22, 8:00 to 9:45am EST (8:00 to 9:45am EST), Boston Marriott Copley Place, Floor: 3rd Floor, Berkeley

Abstract

The end of the First World War marked the peak of efforts to secure territorial claims around Memel, a port area of local significance. This study explores the initiatives undertaken by local actors to manage the transition of the Memel area from Prussia's easternmost territory through a provisional phase under the guidance of the Entente Powers, culminating in its achievement of territorial autonomy under Lithuania. Central to this analysis are the poster campaigns and lobbying efforts of Prussian Lithuanians directed at the League of Nations, aimed at the re-annexation of the region to Germany during the period of 1918 to 1924.
