The Polish Origins of World Heritage: Poland's Cultural Bureaucracy and the Remaking of UNESCO

Sun, November 24, 12:00 to 1:45pm EST (12:00 to 1:45pm EST), Boston Marriott Copley Place, Floor: 3rd Floor, Suffolk

Abstract

Some of the leading architects of UNESCO's World Heritage Convention (1972) were Polish preservations and city planners - who also worked closely with Poland's Ministry of Culture. This paper considers how they navigated between two cultural bureaucracies and in the process shaped both discourses and practices of heritage.
