This paper considers ethical arguments regarding collective guilt and responsibility in Maria Stepanova’s hybrid memoir Pamiati pamiati (2017) and Mikhail Shishkin’s autobiographical essay collection Frieden oder Krieg: Russland und der western—eine annäherung (2019, second edition 2022). The theoretical approach combines cognitive literary theory and Michael Rothberg’s theory of the implicated subject.
