This paper sheds light on emerging issues in China’s Balkan studies. This includes a transition from the traditional ‘nation-states as the basic unit of research’ approach to a cross-country, cross-cultural, cross-ethnic, and cross-regional research focus. Given that contemporary research topics related to Balkan studies transcend the ‘conventional’ research interests within Chinese scholarship, the paper also offers an overview of the institutional foundations enabling diverse and heterogeneous approaches in current Balkan studies in China.
