Gorenshtein’s novel Mesto, which depicts a vast panorama of Soviet life during the Khrushchev Thaw, has the subtitle “A Political Novel.” The paper explores images of the political in Mesto and elsewhere as a key to understanding Gorenstein’s aesthetic practice.
