Liberation and Protection: LGBTQI* Presences in Russia’s War in Ukraine

Thu, November 21, 12:00 to 1:45pm EST (12:00 to 1:45pm EST), Boston Marriott Copley Place, Floor: 3rd Floor, Exeter

Abstract

LGBTQI* communities in Ukraine articulate tense grammars of liberation under conditions of war. Since February 2022, LGBTQI* are facing specific threats: from the attackers, right-wing groups in Ukraine, and because of lacking support when fleeing abroad. Yet LGBTQI* have also openly joined Ukraine’s military, aligning the struggle for LGBTQI* recognition with national protection and self-defense. Are these grammars of liberation mutually compatible, and what role does the grammar of protection play in them?
