In 1970s Poland, young leftist oppositionists searched for progressive ideas that would also appeal to conservatives. For inspiration, they turned to 19th-century radical thinkers including Edward Abramowski, who called for forming a new society outside of the state. My presentation will discuss how Abramowski and his stateless socialism were perceived among opposition intellectuals of the ‘70s and why his ideas ultimately failed to influence the political movement which led to Solidarity.
