Based on the correspondence between Miklosich, Jagić, and Ukrainian scholars of Austria-Hungary and the Russian Empire, we describe the role of Miklosich in the formation of institutional Ukrainian studies in the universities of Galicia and Bukovina (Lviv and Chernivtsi) and explore the influence of Miklosich on Gartner's and Smal-Stotsky's Ukrainian school grammar. We also address Jagić's influence on Smal-Stotsky's academic career and his views on the standardization of the Ukrainian language, once again drawing attention to Jagić's views on the name of the Ukrainian language and the formation of a unified Ukrainian nation.
