Liberation from Mistakes: Erratology as an Approach to Translation Studies in Russian and Soviet Research Tradition

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe, by using a meta-analysis, the research field known as translation erratology, which is considered as a separate paradigm in Russian translation studies. The analysis revealed that research literature on translation erratology has been published since the first decade of the 21st century. Most of this literature has been published in Russia and in the Russian language. Erratological research in English has appeared as well, but most of these publications are also written by Russian researchers. The Russian predominance in erratological research raises questions. Why does the study of mistakes comprise its own field of translation studies in Russia, unlike in Western research? Reasons can be sought in research tradition, including the idea of ​​"one correct translation" based on the concept of realistic translation (Kashkin 1955).
