The paper explores the complexities surrounding the definitions of ethnic minority identity, prompted by the discourses of decolonisation that challenge the Soviet and Russian imperial legacy. These tensions highlight the existing challenges in disentangling "the indigenous" from the mechanisms and products of colonialism in a genuinely emancipatory way that fosters the healing of historical traumas, inclusion and promotion of diversity, and potentially reconciliation between different groups.
