This presentation takes a historical and anthropological approach to the role of culture, including both institutional and independent initiatives in the context of Ukraine's autonomy and diplomacy. Questions such as how to balance diversity with pluralism and innovation with preservation as well as the individual v. the collective notion of self, identity, and democratic speech arise within close examination of how not only artists but leading initiatives within the cultural sphere in the 2000s through the present have contributed to a broader political culture of democracy.
