This study conducts an online survey experiment that exposes adult Russian respondents to the different narratives used in the new compulsory patriotic education program “Conversations about Important Things” introduced in 2022. The authors explore the effect of the narratives on national identity, regime support, support for teaching patriotism in schools, and military service conditioned on prior characteristics. They validate direct measures of support for military service and teaching patriotism with measures that address acquiescence bias and preference falsification.
