Liberation and/as Occupation: The Rhetorics of Liberation and Editorial Policy of International Literature in 1939-1943

Thu, November 21, 4:00 to 5:45pm EST (4:00 to 5:45pm EST), Boston Marriott Copley Place, Floor: 4th Floor, Provincetown

Abstract

The paper addresses the discourse of liberation assumed by the “showcase” English version of the journal International Literature in 1939 to cover the annexation of the Baltic countries, western Ukraine, and Belarus and the metamorphosis it went through in 1941-1943. It looks into the choice of the authors and texts for translation and the poetics of translation to analyze the politics of translation, or theorize it as a discourse of power and resistance–and the way it was reflected in the choice of the authors and texts for translation and the poetics of translation.
