Still Comrades?: The Romanian Army and Soviet Prisoners of War, 1941-1944

Sat, November 23, 4:00 to 5:45pm EST (4:00 to 5:45pm EST), Boston Marriott Copley Place, Floor: 4th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon H

Abstract

In recent years, some historians have uncovered the details of the terrible fate of Soviet prisoners of war (POWs) in the hands of the Wehrmacht. This subject, however, remains obscure and even less is known about how other Axis armies treated Soviet POWs. This paper will review what is known about how the Romanian Army treated POWs and raise questions about what still remains to be answered. In short, Romanians still saw the Soviets as comrades, but the treatment of Soviet POWs by the Romanian Army was more brutal than generally known.
