Narratives of the Russo-Ukrainian war abound in essentiazing statements about the imperial nature or the anti-colonial spirit of the warring parties. These lead to systematically erroneous predictions about the course of the war over more than two years. Writing from a perspective of the forcibly displaced, the author goes beyond the assumptions about the imperial/anti-colonial subjectivity and analyses forms of non-hegemonic control over populations premised on distributing suspicion rather than inculcating an ideology.
