'Another Brick in the Wall': John E. Bowlt and the Russian Avant-Garde

Abstract

In his contribution to the roundtable, Yuri Leving will present A Blue Brick: Festschrift in Honor of John E. Bowlt (Frankfurt/Main, 2023). This collection of articles edited by Prof. Leving celebrates distinguished art historian John E. Bowlt on his 80th birthday. Editor of the journal Experiment; founder and director of the Institute of Modern Russian Culture; collector of books on the history of Russian art, Bowlt educated several generations of American Slavists and specialists in the visual culture of the Russian avant-garde. This Festschrift includes scholarly articles on painting and literature, theater and cinema, culture and folklore, as well as archival publications and memoirs by colleagues, friends and students honoring Professor Bowlt’s esteemed career. Yuri Leving will highlight these chapters and briefly introduce his own research on Sergei Eisenstein and James Joyce published in the book.
