Recent developments have given me reason to consider the practical implications of different authoritarian consolidation processes on research. Having studied Belarus for many years, after the 2020 protest movement I encounter a more closed authoritarian regime. In Azerbaijan, where I also worked a lot, another process can be observed. Repression remains selective, but authoritarianism is consolidated by the regime showcasing adaptability and willingness to embrace change. In the presentation I will be discussing my own experience doing research in these specific cases as well as touching on the implications of increasing authoritarian consolidation on research and researchers in general.
