Who Would Leave Slovakia if Russia Invaded?: The Economic, Political, Demographic, and Religious Determinants of Slovaks' Propensity to Flee Abroad

Sat, November 23, 10:00 to 11:45am EST (10:00 to 11:45am EST), Boston Marriott Copley Place, Floor: 4th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon H

Abstract

After a theoretical and historical overview of earlier refugee flows from Slovakia, I use logistic regression models of data from the "Ako sa máte, Slovensko?" survey of March and April of 2022--just after the Russian invasion of Ukraine--to analyze Slovaks' answers to questions on whether and where they would flee if their country became part of the war zone. Tentative results suggest that more highly educated, left-of-center, urban, secular, and younger residents of the western border regions would be more likely to seek refuge outside the country.
