In the Interwar-period, soccer gained the role of one of the most popular sports and already in 1926 a professional soccer league was founded in Hungary. The specific political situation – antisemitism and economic difficulties – led to an exodus of many very talented Hungarian players to Germany, Italy, Romania, Yugoslavia, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil and other countries. The Stalinist regime would still profit from the world-class quality of Hungarian soccer but bet on a risky game.
