Abstract

The paper focuses on the history of Jana Adabiet as the first Kazakh Soviet literary journal. I examine the journal as a literary institution that, on the one hand, actively broadcasted Soviet ideology and, on the other hand, shaped the new Soviet literary landscape in Kazakhstan in the 1930s. Among other things, Kazakh-language translations from Russian and from European languages appeared on the pages of the journal (for example, one of the issues contains a translation of Erich Maria Remarque's novel All Quiet on the Western Front). In the paper, I explore who exactly created the translations into Kazakh, how the texts for translations were chosen, and what features the translated texts have.
