From his essay on Ivan Karamazov, "A Russian Faust," published in 1902 as an answer to Sergej Bulgakov, to his play "Faust and the city," conceived in 1906, finished in 1910, completely re-written in 1916 and finally published in 1918, Lunacharsky chose Faust as a symbolic figure. The paper points out crucial moments of Lunacharsky's interpretations and how they relate to his world-view in different times of his life.
