Sun, November 24, 8:00 to 9:45am EST (8:00 to 9:45am EST), Boston Marriott Copley Place, Floor: 3rd Floor, Simmons

Abstract

The paper analyzes select Soviet 1920s constructivist books that qualify as "emancipatory cinepoetry". Emancipation of women is exemplified by The Song of Tanya (1926) by N. Vladimyrski and S. Sen’kin, internationalism and racial equality is demonstrated in the analysis of Syphilis (1926) by Maiakovskii and Rodchenko, and Jewish emancipation focuses on Jew (1927) by Maiakovskii and Rozhkov. The roles of documentary and staged photography, as well as photomontage technique are highlighted throughout.
