Shaping Gender through Beliefs: Ukrainian 19th Century Beliefs and Productive Marginalization in a Context of Gender Construction

Sat, November 23, 2:00 to 3:45pm EST (2:00 to 3:45pm EST), Boston Marriott Copley Place, Floor: 1st Floor, Columbus 2

Abstract

Perception of gender varies on age, occupation, and status of an individual. At the same time, in pre-modern society deviations from commonly accepted statuses bring forth beliefs towards the deviated individual. The paper looks at gender perception and its disruption as a folkloric phenomenon as the one that is supported, surrounded, and constructed by beliefs entailing productive marginalization and endowing with power.
