In his time during and after exile in Yakutiia, Vladimir Bogoraz wrote about the different roles that he had to perform such as the collector of Chukchi folklore, photographer, a linguist of the Chukchi language, and a doctor. Even though he didn't have any formal medical training, he was well informed in this field.
This paper explores Bogoraz's role as a self-taught doctor who described the male illnesses of the political prisoners and the indigenous peoples. This paper argues that Bogoraz's personal correspondence reveals that male illnesses were talked about, and he sought to provide treatment for them. He was doing the work not only of a cultural anthologist, but also treating those who needed medical help.
