Abstract

The Caspian was an area of intense Russian and international interest and competition in
the early eighteenth century. Amidst the compilation of multiple new maps of the
Caspian, this paper analyzes the Caspian Sea maps of Bekovich-Cherkassky and Kozhin
as sources to deepen understanding of the history of Russian colonization in the region.
