Book Discussion: From Peoples into Nations: A History of Eastern Europe, by John Connelly

Sat, November 23, 4:00 to 5:45pm EST (4:00 to 5:45pm EST), Boston Marriott Copley Place, Floor: 3rd Floor, Berkeley

Session Submission Type: Roundtable

Brief Description

Connelly's magnum opus (Princeton, 2020) was never discussed at ASEEES because of the pandemic, but its new interpretation of the nature and power of ethnic nationalism and its sweeping narrative about the distinctiveness of Eastern Europe from the 18th to the 21st cc. speaks to scholars in many fields. This roundtable assembles a group with the chronological and geographical breadth of expertise to assess Connelly's central thesis on the power of nationalism. Notably, it brings historians of Germany and Russia/USSR into dialogue with East Europeanists.
