Session Submission Type: Panel
Affiliate Organization: Bulgarian Studies Association
The modern Bulgarian nation emerged and developed amidst the accelerating pace of economic, social and political change from the nineteenth century Europe to the present. These change trends intensified conflicts with established institutions and authorities inherited from the preceding historical epoch, e.g., interwar period, Communist era, post-9/11. The pressures and demands of new and ascendant collective actors clashed with the status quo, which reacted with conservative counter movements. Observers today label these economic, social and political changes as the consequences of globalization. This panel aims to place Bulgaria within a historical and comparative context to explore how this under studied Balkan nation state has responded to globalization.
