Session Submission Type: Roundtable
Over the past decade, the Russian government has dramatically increased its weaponization of cultural production to attempt to achieve a wide variety of state prerogatives. That has remained the case following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. What is the impact of those efforts? What can they tell us about Russian state intentions, aspirations, strengths, and weaknesses—not least in terms of military strategy? This roundtable will showcase the value of treating Russian cultural production, particularly film, as OSINT. The discussion will feature contributors to our 2024 edited volume from both the private sector and academia, including media studies, law, history, and political science, among others.
