Drawing on sources in Russian, Bulgarian, and Arabic, this panel explores the cultural, diplomatic, and security aspects of Soviet/Russian interactions with the Arab and Muslim worlds. Margaret Peacock (University of Alabama) uncovers Radio Moscow's role in the "Big Lie" of the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, while Dmitry Asinovskiy (Central European University) plumbs the origins of Soviet support for the Palestine Liberation Organization. Benjamin Allison (University of Texas at Austin) examines Soviet policy toward the Egyptian-Israeli peace process, while Vassily Klimentov (University of Zurich) takes a longer view of continuities in Soviet/Russian relations with the Muslim world since the 1970s.
