Session Submission Type: Roundtable
This round table explores primary sources beyond texts into sound. It foregrounds the voices and songs of Indigenous Siberian communities, from knowledge traditions that relied on the vocal artistry of accomplished specialists, rather than the written word. Participants will describe collections of sound recordings made among Indigenous communities living in Arctic Russia and Siberia. Collections under discussion include those of Indiana University, University of Helsinki, the Institute of Ethnography of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkin House) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
