Borders in Russian History

Sun, November 24, 10:00 to 11:45am EST (10:00 to 11:45am EST), Boston Marriott Copley Place, Floor: 3rd Floor, MIT

Session Submission Type: Roundtable

Brief Description

This round table proceeds from the observation that borders, along with associated concepts (boundaries, frontiers, territory, and sovereignty) have recently become a significant topic of inquiry in diverse fields. Assembling scholars who range across different periods and regions of the Russian Empire and the USSR, and who explore both international borders and internal ones, the round table seeks to assess the state of the field and to engage with two questions in particular: 1) What do borders and boundaries mean for Russia's history? and 2) How did Russia make borders and borders make Russia? Principally an exercise in history, we envision that the discussion will enthuse and delight participants from diverse disciplines and contribute to the conference theme of "liberation" by exploring the contours of freedom pertaining to a specific kind of human movement across space.
