Session Submission Type: Roundtable
In the realm of proficiency-based language instruction, the imposition of oral and written assessments, often tied to governmental programs, presents a dual challenge: meeting proficiency standards while fostering student liberation in expression. Our proposed round table seeks to delve into these challenges, focusing on strategies to empower students within the confines of such assessments. As instructors, we grapple with the tension between providing necessary language skills and respecting the autonomy of our learners. How do we cultivate freedom of expression while navigating the rigid structures of assessment? This round table aims to explore this complex terrain, addressing key questions. With a special emphasis on state-funded programs such as Flagship, ProjectGo!, FSI, and DLIFLC.
The landscape of Advanced and Superior Language programs is increasingly shaped by required assessments, notably oral proficiency interviews (OPIs) and Defense Language Proficiency Tests (DLPTs). While these assessments are crucial for evaluating proficiency, they often pose a dilemma for instructors: how to prepare students without resorting to rote coaching? Moreover, how do we ensure that our students not only excel in assessments but also develop authentic linguistic competence and confidence?
Discussion Points:
Liberation through Preparation: Balancing Exam Readiness and Authentic Learning
Navigating Test-taking Strategies: Empowering Students for Success
Formative Assessment in Advanced and Superior Language Classes
Cultivating Self-assessment Skills: Empowering Learners Beyond the Classroom
What components of programs and how do we need to assess for successful language learning: students’ skills, teaching materials, teachers’ skills, extracurricular opportunities, etc?
