Session Submission Type: Roundtable
What tools can scholars draw upon to study the imperial formations that have operated in modern Northeast Asia, as well as the histories and aesthetics of the diverse “liberational” projects that have emerged across Russia, the Korean Peninsula, Japan and China? What challenges, both institutional and theoretical, does Northeast Asia pose within the North American academy, and do such challenges exist within other academic lineages, particularly within the post-Soviet region? With this roundtable, we bring together voices from history, anthropology, Asian studies, Soviet cultural studies and film studies to discuss such questions, as well as liberational futurities. The panelists will also address practical matters relevant to any scholar with an interest in East Asia and the Russian Far East, such as archival access, language training and institutional funding for transnational research projects.
