Session Submission Type: Panel
The panel delves into the political and intellectual history of the Ukrainian lands during the latter half of the 19th century, a period profoundly influenced by two primary ideological currents: socialism and nationalism. We explore various projects for Ukrainian national liberation in the Habsburg and Russian Empires proposed by eminent political, cultural, and academic figures of that era who actively engaged in discussions about the future of Ukrainian people. The first paper aims to reassess Mykhailo Drahomanov’s views on the Ukrainian socialism, situating him within the broader intellectual landscape of his time. The second paper scrutinizes the contributions of Khrystyna Alchevs’ka, Borys Hrynchenko, and S. An-skii to the formation of the reading culture in eastern Ukraine. The third paper presents Franz Miklosich’s and Vatroslav Jagić’s deliberations on the standardization of the Ukrainian language and institutionalization of Ukrainian studies in the western Ukrainian lands.
