Session Submission Type: Roundtable
Affiliate Organization: American Association for Ukrainian Studies
Why did Russia invade Ukraine? Was the war inevitable, ideologically driven or a miscalculation by the Kremlin? This roundtable presents scholars of political science who study Ukraine and Russia, with a variety of expertise: comparative politics, international relations, military studies and U.S. foreign policy. They will reflect on the causes of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the methods of war from different theoretical perspectives, and contemplate possible resolutions to the war on the basis of their current studies. The speakers will address military tactics, atrocities committed by Russian forces, as well as the Ukrainian resistance and geo-political shifts, which followed the invasion. The Kremlin's decision to invade Ukraine in 2014, and then to double down on that invasion with the large-scale attack in 2022, is a global event that will continue to resonate for generations to come. As the situation is rapidly changing, the roundtable format is meant to address the most recent political and social developments from scholarly perspectives.
