Session Submission Type: Roundtable
This roundtable brings together scholars, poets, and translators who explore innovative ways of thinking and writing about translation that defy traditional genre boundaries. Stemming from an international poetry and translation symposium held in 2020 and the ensuing essay collection Contemporary Translation in Transition: Poems, Theories, Conversations (Academic Studies Press, 2024), the round table addresses theoretical, aesthetic, and cross-cultural facets of contemporary poetry translation and translingual writing in a multilingual and multicultural space. Contributors of the round table bring their diverse perspectives based on their work as scholars, poets, and editors, often combining hybrid identities in shaping innovative approaches to translation. The round table seeks to deepen the understanding of the role of poetry translation in the multilingual and multicultural space, and to close the gaps separating the practice of writing poems from acts of poetic translation and transculturation on the one hand and from research and teaching about poetry on the other.
