Session Submission Type: Panel
The Russo-Ukrainian War contributes to the rethinking and re-evaluation of sites of
memory associated with the world wars in this region. Russia abuses sites of memory related to
“common” history, including memorials and cemeteries, to declare the region as a zone of its
influence. Central and Eastern European countries are attempting to sever all ties with Russia.
In this panel, we would like to consider how the symbolic meanings of war memorials are changing, what ideological connotations are embedded in the creation of new memorials, and why a “war of monuments” is unfolding in parallel with the real war.
