Session Submission Type: Lightning Round
This Lightning Roundtable features reports which present new research in Russian visual culture. An exploration of the evolving understanding of Symbolism and the Russian Silver Age, and its kinship with the avant-garde practitioners that succeeded it, is followed by a study of Konstantin Somov’s contacts and collaborations with the Berlin modernist scene. Artistic careers of two of Russia’s notable graphic artists, Nicholas Remizov and Mikhail Drizo, are then discussed in the context of recent scholarship on Russian artists in exile. The report that follows presents A Blue Brick: Festschrift in Honor of John E. Bowlt, a recently published collection of scholarly articles on artistic, folk and performance culture honoring Prof. Bowlt’s esteemed career, and introduces new research on Sergei Eisenstein and James Joyce published in this volume.
